[spoiler=Q & A with Tony Gardner] I was privileged to attend a Q & A session with Tony Gardner at the IRace4life seminar in Dallas Texas Thursday March 5. After the Q & A session I was able to have a little one on one conservation with Tony while eating some good old Texas Bar-B-Q. Just to make things clear, The IRace4Life seminar is not connected to the company IRacing. It is the brain child of one of our Texas IRacers who happens to be a senior pastor at one of our Texas churches. He has been able to integrate this event into the church men’s event which they hold every year. The church men’s event foots the bill for the advertising on IRacing and the seminar. The seminar is free to all Iracers who want to attend. They hold classes, host races and feed you Breakfast, lunch and dinner, all free of charge. They only request that you attend some of the general sessions which are held during the men’s event. If you don’t want to attend, you don’t have too but they do put on a first class show. The seminar is held at Gateway Church, Dallas Texas. When I say church that is an understatement. This is a Texas church which means it is the size of a convention center. They encourage racers to bring their sim rigs and they hold tournaments throughout the event. There are probably 20 to 30 sim rigs set up at the event. The auditorium probably seats several thousand people. This is the fourth year the seminar has been held and I have been lucky to be able to attend all four years. This year Tony Gardner decided to attend and meet some of the Iracers. Tony and Iracing are not affiliated with the event other than to lend support by their presence. I hope that explains what the seminar is and no one feels they have been left out. That being said, here are some of the things Tony had to say. Many may already know these things, but others may not. Since I was the only Indy car guy there, surrounded by about a hundred NASCAR guys, some of this information will need to be translated into Indy speak. 1. The new build coming out the week of March 10 will have a large spring change. From what was said changing the spring rates will now change the static ride heights as well. Since a 1000lb spring is not the same height as a 500lb spring this will be reflected when you make a change. Spring rates will be more radical. Example LR at 500lbs and RR at 4000lb. These were A car examples but the build is said to be for all cars. This is still not firm and could change. Running low spring rates in the rear to get the wing out of the air will be different now. Not sure how. Keeping the front sealed to the track will be more important. Again A car talk! 2. Another change in the draft. The Alpha testers who were there said it will be much improved. Side drafting will now be more realistic. In the A car the draft will extend back to about 1.5 sec. Again they said this would be for all cars. We’ll see how it works for the DW12. Personally I can’t deal with anymore aero push. 3. A new interface change is coming. The next build will have some changes but the entire interface will be changed at some point. Whatever that means? He said there would be four buttons when you sign in, one for race one for practice, etc. 4. No change to the tire model in this build. 5. Dynamic track conditions are soon to be released. This is separate from weather. Tony said that track temps will change during the race. Rubber build up will be an issue along with different track conditions changing during the race. Nothing more specific. When running off track there will be gravel, dirt and other things affecting the tires and the car. 6. I asked the question of racing off the track (MIS, Chicagoland, etc.). My suggestion was a black flag for running off the track surface. Tony said they could do that and should do something about the issue. He agreed that they should be giving black flags for Indy cars running off track while still allowing NASCAR’s rules for other cars. He only agreed something should be done but did not commit to anything. At least he knows. 7. Burning down fuel for qual in the fixed series. He is aware of the issue. He said they had reduced the qual time limit to five minutes in order to minimize the effect. They cannot reduce the fuel to two gallons for qual only. He seemed to infer that qual for road and oval were tied with this time event. 8. Qualifying for each race instead of having one hot lap put you up front for the entire week. He said they already do this with the Star Mazda. He said he wants to change this to be more like the hosted sessions. His example was when joining an official race you would go into a practice session for maybe 30 minutes and then qual would start. At that point when qual was over you would be sorted by qual times then put into the proper split. You would need only to join once. The program would do the rest. I really like this idea. No time frame was given. I will need to run a Star Mazda official race to see how this works. 9. Tony said that Fixed Indy car oval is the 5th most popular series on IRacing. He plans to have a fixed road series to go along with the Fixed oval series. Just my opinion but open oval is the Walking Dead. 10. Info Only: over 130,000 people have joined IRacing. There are 55,000 active members at this point. He says that for this line of business that is very high retention rate. They have a five year plan but he would not share that. He stated that they plan for IRacing to be around for the next ten years and more. They are profitable and that is a good thing. 11. As far as Ferrari and other cars, they have relations with these people and actually made a deal but in the end it was too expensive so they walked away. So no time soon for that. 12. Most of the other questions were stock car related like, no in car track bar adjustments for NASCAR’s. 13. Animated pit crews are on the list.
